Czechs in Cuba and a Creative Californian in Chester

Twenty miles from Munchkinland was the town of Cuba where we planned to find food at Two Doors Down, now named Cuba Cafe.

In addition to kolaches, we found 10% of the town’s population playing cards.

Their ancestors were Czechs seeking a better life and good farmland. It’s said that a visitor to the town found its inhabitants friendly like Cubans, whence the name. They are still friendly!!

In the next town of Belleville, we also found a lively card game under way. That seems to be a Tuesday morning thing here. Maybe that’s why both museums we wanted to see today were closed.

Just over the border into Nebraska is the town of Chester.

Artist Cindy Chinn, originally from California, purchased the town’s school and turned the entire building into a series of studios for each of the many art media where she unleashes her volcanic creativity.

She and friend, Art Whitton, are hosting us tonight.

They even had an open house for us that was well-attended by friends and neighbors.

  1. I thought about riding on the plains last night. The storms in the distance. I could speed up to try to outrun them, or slow down to let them pass by. But it was all an illusion of some kind of control. They had the run of the prairies, emperors, while I had just my narrow little string of a road to balance on.

I could sense the cold air pouring into the tops of the thunderheads, cascading down through the dark interior, hitting the plains with a splash, fanning out in all directions.
